Analysis of Reservoir Dogs ‘Ear’ Scene

The Onion AV Club does an analysis of the Mr. Blonde straight razor scene from Reservoir Dogs. Hard to believe that film is 20 years old.

Then there’s Mr. Blonde’s little dance routine, which Madsen performs with exactly the right degree of half-assed mockery. Given this showcase—it’s just him and someone who’s bound and gagged—a lot of actors would choose to showboat, really cut some moves. Madsen understands that Mr. Blonde is terrifying because he doesn’t give a shit, which means he isn’t gonna expend any real energy even on a performance expressly designed to humiliate a torture victim. He doesn’t so much dance as just kinda shuffle a little, doing the absolute minimum necessary to convey rhythmic movement.

Michel Gondry Says Tarantino’s Movies Are Too Mean

Are Quentin Tarantino’s movies too mean and revengy?  Michael Gondry (director of The Green Hornet and Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind) thinks so – he can only stomach Pulp Fiction.

Before they head to Louisiana for he majority of the film, Tarantino is shooting some scenes at the Melody Ranch in Santa Clarita, California.

“Its a blast shooting here,” Tarantino said in a break from shooting. “Most other western towns look like dollhouses. This has the complete look. It’s fantastic”.

Gary Oldman As Drexl Spivey

In an article primarily about Gary Oldman’s new movie Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy, they also list 10 previous great roles Oldman has had – including Drexl Spivey in True Romance.

The name alone will delight cineastes with a fondness for quirky Quentin Tarantino characters, one of the best being Oldman’s cacophonous white-boy pimp from Tarantino’s first screenplay. With a ludicrous set of dreadlocks, gold fronts and a stream of gangsterspeak, Oldman devours everything in sight in just seven minutes of screen time.

Django Unchained Poster Design

We are several months away from their being any official Django Unchained posters revealed, but some fans are thinking ahead.  They have created an online petition to have Dude Designs create the Django Unchained Poster. Dude Designs is perhaps best known for the Hobo With A Shotgun poster design.

The Dude Design posters I’ve seen are all very good, but they are stylized in a way that I don’t think would work great for the wide audience Django Unchained is seeking.  They could have done a hell of a job with the Death Proof poster though, and I would like to see one of the alternate Django Unchained posters done in the Dude Designs style.

Django Unchained Script Thoughts, Part 1

Had it for months, but just started reading the Django Unchained script this week.  I’m only about 30 minutes into it, but here are some early thoughts:

Christoph Waltz is going to win another Oscar for this role.  The writing is witty and fits him perfectly.

The movie starts quickly, with 2 great sequences right off the bat.

The dialog is funny.  Not laugh out loud funny, but the kind of funny where you find yourself smiling thru the whole thing.  I’d call it classic Tarantino, but that understates its cleverness.
