Machete GRINDHOUSE Spin-Off
Robert Rodriguez announced at SWSX that he’s going to be releasing a direct to DVD ‘sequel’ of GRINDHOUSE based on the Machete faux trailer.

Am huge fan from day 1, also love the collaborations with Rodriguez. Just watched the sneak peak to Grindhouse & looks like ya’ll done it again. Love the casting….but what’s the deal? You give credit to everyone except my main man, Danny Trejo, way not cool. As far as I’m concerned he’s right up there with Harvey Keitel, who by the way I would love to have father my children, or at least practice with me.
But Danny Trejo does not get near the kudos he well deserves. And he is the epitome of the guy my Mom told me not to go with, but I would sneak off to meet.
If there is anything better than the casting of your films, it would be the music, your choices are phenomanal.

I dont like the concept of strait to video movie. I believe it takes away something. I believe that a movie should be reliesed theater. But its their thing not mine.

He’s only doing a direct-to-DVD release as a courtesy to Hollywood, otherwise Machete would win the Oscar in EVERY CATEGORY.

I’m setting a rule right now, nobody is allowed to say it’s gonna suck just for being DTV. It comes down to the artists involved, not the medium it debuts on.
What’s gonna happen is that this is gonna be the wildest Rodriguez flick EVER. This is a low budget/low risk investment for the producers, so they won’t be watching over his shoulder making sure he’s not putting in too much tits and violence, that scene with the chicks in the waterfall? It’s gonna be in there. If this is anything like the Japanese video cinema market, it means RR is gonna have more freedom than he’s had with a movie since El Mariachi.

The whole concept of ‘straight-to-video’ is awesome! Thats what Grindhouse is all about, it’s an ethic surrounding pulp film-making. Make a film regardless of whether or not it can reach it’s audience, in fact it’s about the audience reaching the movie. This required act of discovery empowers the ‘true’ fan.
I’ve just written an article about Grindhouse over at ArtsWom that addresses some issues around the film and Tarantino. I’d be interested to hear what you think…

I love the themed analogies. “Buzz as loud as a thousand buzzing chainsaws” “Sweating bullets”, true to Grindhouse style in your words alone! Reminds me of how Once Upon A Time In Mexico wasn’t filmed and edited, it was “Shot” and then it was “Chopped”.
I wouldn’t worry that it’s gonna be all flash no substance, though. Ever since Reservoir Dogs, Tarantino’s been doing pretty much what he’s doing with Grindhouse. He’s always been reworking genre cliches into dramatic stories that resonate on a human level.
Rodriguez on the other hand, his work is exciting, but sometimes lacking in pathos. It more than makes up for that with all the sheer coolness and atmosphere it exudes. What I’ve heard of Planet Terror though is that it’s really a breakthrough for RR on a dramatic level, that this is the first time you could watch a Rodriguez flick and cry if one of the characters dies.
Great article! The only reason I read it is because your comment reeks of an open minded intellectual film buff, and that’s not what you usually see on movie forums (AICN talkbacks being the most obvious example of dumbness, bias and hipper than thou dipsticks).

It’s interesting what you said about planet terror because in the trails it doesn’t look like that kind of movie at all. It’s going to be cool to see how it turns out… I thought The Faculty was great because of the atmosphere, the slow mo as they walk to the car is just fantastic. The film is a real highpoint in RR’s back catalogue, plus it’s a referential homage of sorts…

Yeah the trailer is only playing the action bits. But remember that the trailer for Kill Bill didn’t have the shot of The Bride crying when she sees her baby has been taken from her.
The making of has some interesting dramatic moments for both halves. As scary movies, the dramatic moments are of course, scary, but they don’t seem devoid of real character and pathos.

Except that, if it is indeed a straight to video movie, it won’t be directed by Rodriguez. It will be more like those awful From Dusk Till Dawn sequels, directed by Scott Spiegel or RR’s brother or some other hack who otehrwise wouldn’t get work.

You have got to be kidding me. I love GRINDHOUSE alot and QT is the shit. Next their gonna start making all the “fake” trailers real. that is the point of them being fake. thats what stoped me from having a heart attack. all the waiting sucks. if they are making machete a film it should be released the same day as Grindhouse.
