Inglourious Basterds Cannes Reviews
I don’t like this… most of the dialogue is in German and French and translated with subtitles.

Remember a few months ago when I told you this movie was going to suck balls because QT went with a bunch of sackless 11 year-olds instead of Uncle Mike? Looks like I was right. Most everyone has already panned the shit out of it. HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA
Maybe he should have put his moral integrity ahead of his need to be young and trendy.

this pretty much confirms my worst fears – QT aint what he used to be…not only will this be a box office failure, but with lots and lots of subtitles and little action, this movie will alienate even his fans – like the ones on this site.
Finally, the reviews even say the basterds themselves are not even in it that much – wtf?! what happened to his wwII spaghetti western EPIC he was gonna create? and the whole “oh let’s finish this in time for cannes” thing just really grates…when was the last great film rushed in time so a bunch of film weenies could see it? I mean the guy started filming in Dec. or Jan. for gawd’s sake – and he finishes it in may – complete with post production? gimmie a break…
he should have just taken his time, rethought the whole thing and concentrated on making a good movie…I really think QT has bought into his own legend and this is what we get for it…sad really.

Hah, you didn’t know the dialogue was mostly in French and German? Obviously you didn’t read the script… Well I did and it was great. The film will be too, you’ll see.
The main reason it’s getting mixed reviews is that people are expecting an action flick. Which it is not, I can tell you. It seems this thing is very wrongly marketed…
It’s an adventure story, for fucks sake!

I agree with you a million percent! I have actually had the pleasure of reading the script and it was beyond enjoyable.
The only way QT could mess up this script is if he forgot how to direct a movie. I have read many reviews of Basterds and it seems to me the things that a lot of people are picking apart are the scenes with French & German subtitles.
This is not going to be 2 and a half hours of shoot em up. Here’s a news flash, Neither was Pulp Fiction. If these haters who are bashing would sit down and watch Good Bad & The Ugly or even Once Upon a Time In America they will understand that most of QT’s scenes with a lot of dialouge are superbly executed and mostly build toward rewarding suspense.
Sure there may be a few scenes that are maybe a little self indulgent. Remember the begining of Resevoir Dogs?
At what point in any movie does any legit Gangster have the right to be sitting around talking about Madonna and Lucky Star and Like A Virgin? It doesn’t drive the plot but it’s fun and you learn a lot about the characthers personalites just from that opening scene.
You can’t please everyone. I’m sure that some of the film will most likely be edited a bit in the months before it’s August American Premiere. It’s sad to me that movie goers attention spans are so impatient that they can’t sit through rich and witty dialouge that actually makes the violent scenes more sweeter when they occur before our very eyes.

I don’t see what the big deal about subtitles is. It fits the context of the movie. “Once upon a time in Nazi occupied France.” Nazis were German, so that makes sense, and heaven forbid they speak French in…France. How about you wait until you actually see the movie, or at least read the script (which I will not) before condemning its use of subtitles to, I dunno, semi-accurately portray the people he’s trying to portray?

Chadm724, I could not agree with you more. I also find it incredibly sad that just because a movie doesn’t have as much action as a 5 minute sequence in a Michael Bay film does NOT mean it’s boring. God forbid we enjoy a movie for the writing and the characters.
And, as you also point out, many people often forget, in fact, VERY often forget, that Tarantino always has a bunch of dialogue (with the lone pseudo-exception being Kill Bill Vol. 1, MAYBE) leading up to some memorable action scenes. It’s almost as if as the audience becomes younger, the criticisms become more and more similar to “there’s not as much action as he used to use!”…which is just not how Tarantino’s movies are…Tarantino is a great writer who just happens to be good at throwing in action scenes that are well-directed and well-placed…too many people miss this
