Its Official: Kill Bill Is Now 2 Movies
Harvey Weinstein, a co-founder of Miramax, which is financing the film, said in an interview on Monday that the first installment would be in theaters on Oct. 10. The second release date is in still being negotiated, but it could be two to six months later, he said.
When Mr. Tarantino first approached Mr. Weinstein about doing "Kill Bill" several years ago, it was with the condition that he be allowed to film the whole 200-page script that he had written. When Mr. Weinstein visited the set in its last month of shooting late last year, Mr. Tarantino said in a statement, Mr. Weinstein brought up the idea of splitting it in two.
No decision was made at the time although Mr. Tarantino shot two opening-credit sequences, he said. Mr. Weinstein said it was not until he visited Los Angeles three weeks ago, when Mr. Tarantino showed him more than an hour and a half of the film, that the two decided on the two-film approach.
"Kill Bill" is the story, told in chapters, of the world's deadliest female assassin, who survives being shot on her wedding day and, after five years in a coma, seeks revenge on the man who tried to kill her. The film's samurai-style fight sequences were filmed largely in China and take place in everything from a nightclub to a snow-covered garden to a suburban home.
"There were no obstacles involved in splitting up `Kill Bill' at all because I've always designed the movie, thought about the film, as malleable in any number of versions," Mr. Tarantino said in his statement. That includes different versions for Asia, America and Europe.

Splitting a movie up into pieces is only worth it if the story is extremely compelling and you have good reason to believe that your audience will wait for the finale and not trash the 1st film as 'incomplete'. It worked with Lord of the Rings, and Matrix Reloaded sort of pulled it off (the incomplete label was thrown around), but Kill Bill is not supposed to be that same type of movie. Its more of a fun, action, B-movie tribute type film that not many people are going to have the patience to come back to find out how the story ends - because the story isn't the hook, the action is.

Assuming that the movie was in fact made and written in distinct chapters, this would make successfully splitting it into two movies, which each can hold it's own, fairly easy. You'd need two main story arcs instead of one, but if I know Tarantino like I think I do, he'll have a whole lot more than just two major story arcs already in the script. Given Tarantino's style, I expect Kill Bill part 2 to not take place *after* the first part, but simultenously.

I think splitting the film in two is an awful idea. Like the person above said, that'll only work if the story is compelling enough and this sounds like a hack-n-slash to me so I don't know how well that'll work.
BUT, being that it is Tarrantino we're talking about, I'm sure he'll find some way to make it super interesting.

I wonder how the split will affect merchandising for the film(s)? Are we going to have to buy two separate DVDs, or will they be released together?
Or will Miramax get really stupid and release each of the DVDs separately, only to release some sort of boxed set containing them both 6 months later.

I was really into this movie and I hated to see it come to an end without seeing the rest. I was loving the anime/samurai style of fighting, but I really don't know if I can't wait long for the second movie to come out. I mostly loved this movie because I'm into the spy action movies and that's the only thing that kept me interested. I will see the second part although I was dissapointed with the short ending of the first =D.

Anyone who says this film has been ruined by its splitting is an ASS.....This is a fantastic movie and is a classic tribute to many many years of Manga/Anime- and the best of these were broken down into segments, mainly because of development time BUT many of them where completed series and still sold as such. Any classic Manga/Anime fans (Fist of the North Star,Akira,Ninja Scrolls,The Overfiend series,Crying Freeman etc...)
or even Mange-Live..(Gunhead, Crying Freeman..etc)
Will accept this movie AS IS
I wouldnt care if the movie was sold in chapters....as long as I could get them all...

but it could be two to six months later, he said.
