Various Stuff

  • Kurt Russell is disappointed in the GRINDHOUSE split, but optimistic about the lengthened version of Death Proof. Yeah, so is pretty much everyone else.

  • Harsh words for QT in the Brisbane Times.

Wow what a half ass hate article. I was going to quote a few things but the hell with it. There are too many things to consider.

Quentin appeals to the fan, and not the critic. I've yet to see a Tarantino movie that wasn't more than great. I've watched every major "critically acclaimed" movie in the past 3 years and I've yet to see any audience reation like the one I saw after Death Proof. People were literally stading up clapping, cheering, and whistling. And this isn't some premier or huge opening. The people just loved it.

Regardless of all the talk about how unsuccessful the Grindhouse movie is, you can't deny that people enjoyed themselves. Which is more than can be said about a lot of the films expereinces as of late.

People only like you when your on top, and I'm glad that Quentin hasn't sacrificed the quality of his films for the usual "hit and miss" Hollywood bullshit.

Come on Weinstein, you know you loved the movie!

These damn people don't know shit about good movies. Quentin is the greatest filmmaker since Scorsese in his prime and Sam Peckinpah. I've seen all his films and I loved everyone of them, INCLUDING Jackie Brown. And I don't give a damn what they say Death Proof was a damn good movie and so was Planet Terror. The whole fucking Grindhouse experiance was great. I saw it three times and every time the audience reacted in a way I never saw an audience react to a movie. And there is no way Quentin has lost his thunder. Hell that fucker could make movies in his sleep if someone dared him to. I also agree with Kurt Russell with him saying people will regret missing the Grindhouse experiance because you will never see this again unless Quentin and Robert tell the Weinsteins to get fucked and make movies the old fashioned Roger Corman. I've never heard such shit as I read in that article. Quentin will continue to thrive on making movies his way and I gurantee you he'll wow the hell out of us including the stiff dicks who bash him to this day with Inglourious Bastards and any other thing he comes out. Quentin will never loose his thunder.

I still can't believe the stuff I am hearing about Grindhouse. First of all my boyfriend and I thought it was the most amazing movie ever. I thought everything about it was brilliant (the fake trailers done by other talented directors, using some of the same actors for both movies, the tie-ins from Tarantino's Death Proof to his other movies....). When I first heard about Grindhouse, I was so excited, and then there's always that big anticipation to see it and sometimes getting dissapointed. But this was far from dissapointment. This met my expectations and much more. I really hope Tarantino and Rodriguez do not get discouraged because that would be a shame. Some people just cannot appreciate true art at it's finest.
I think they are both genius' when it comes to film making. I also think it would be fun to see another Grindhouse. Maybe : HOBO WITH A SHOTGUN & THANKSGIVING back to back. Gawd... I love GRINDHOUSE. AND I can't wait to see more from Tarantino and Rodriguez.

QT is a major failure now because he didnt open at #1. Riiiight.

Jackie Brown didnt do that great at the BO and its one of QTs best, if not THE best film hes done.

Death Proof is brilliant. Its QT at his best as a writer and director. I completely loved it and saw it 3 times at the theater and watched it about 6 or 7 times on my computer. (No I dont do that regularly, but hey, I love the movie!!)

Filmmakers never go through their careers and have box office hits every time. To equate box office dissapointment with lack of talent is so goddamn stupid. Some of the "critics" out there are freakin retarded and dont deserve to be printed at all.

I'm as much of a QT fan now as I ever was the reason is because he makes the kinds of movies I love to watch!!

Cant wait for Inglorious Bastards and beyond!!

    [7] On May-25-2007, 2freaky4church wrote:

Mason Wardell, who does a podcast, where he does movie reviews, among other things, had this to say about Tarantino and the film Death Proof:

"Now, in regards to the defense of Tarantino's work, I feel like I should first clarify my position before just debating the claims made against me. I agree and understand your point about Tarantino's dialog - it is written to be in a movie and not directly reflect reality and his attention to details is one thing that has separated him from other filmmakers. However, using characters as a means for showing off obscure counter-cultural trivia is as tiring as it is predictable in his films - not to mention a tad narcissistic. So, when I say "women don't talk like that", what I am truly saying is that his women characters are often just vehicles for him to write himself into the film and are therefore dishonest portrayals of women. Whether or not he is more in touch with women than myself isn't really debatable because I don't know any stunt-driving, sword-wielding, penis-envying amazons (which he champions in his films). I only know educated, job-having, socially-conscious mothers and daughters who tend to side with me on this particular point. So we kind of just know different types of women to be in touch with"

"But this brings me to the other point worth talking about: the Tarantino fascination with "Nigga/Nigger" (depending on what character is saying it). Interestingly enough, this is a shared perspective brought up by Mike and agreed with by me yet you only called me out for it. I don't know or care what that's about - what bothers me is that you conclude that I am being overly-PC. I am not calling for the removal of the word from his films (or any other film) on the sole principle that it is offensive to any group (that is what political correctness is). Nor did I ever make the claim that black women don't use the word as much as men (shoot, I live and teach in West Seattle and White Center - I know 3rd graders with fouler mouths). My problem is that Tarantino has made it his motif to be the white filmmaker who makes a point to use this word and has, in part, re-popularized its liberal use among white people - without provocation or motivation.

In Pulp Fiction, Jimmy (played by Tarantino) reacts to a situation where two gangsters want to store a the body of a dead black kid in his garage by asking sarcastically if there was a sign that said "dead nigger storage" out front. The audience reacts with laughter (why is that funny?). Coupled with the fact that his supposed wife in the film is a gorgeous black woman....you see what I'm saying?

Tarantino's false membership into the cultures that he so readily co-opts is disturbing - he cartoonizes black people and furthers damaging stereotypes for enjoyment by a largely white audience and never creates characters to counter these ills (which is a large piece he missed from Blaxploitation films: Shaft, Goldie and any number of Pam Grier characters were, first-and-foremost, black-identified social revolutionaries, political and righteous for some tangible cause.)

In conclusion, I own a number of Tarantino films because he is an entertaining director and I love his sense of timing and set-up. But, from a sociological perspective, I think there is a lot that he does that is irresponsible and damaging to the already fragile and generally unaddressed racial anxiety in this country. "

What cha think, does he have a point?

I dont agree with any of that BS. QT writes all his characters how HE hears real people (mostly friends of his speak). Its all based on truth and honesty. Of course hes making movies, so some of it is going to be heightened for effect.

QT is QT, he can't say hes wrong or bad for having a specific personality as a writer/director and a person.

If people dont like his stuff, they dont have to go see it. But don't dictate whats right and whats wrong for him to do as an artist.

What that entire thing is really about is QT using the N word in his films. Some people have problems with it, but QT isnt coming from a racist place, hes coming from an honest real life place. Hes also not gonna use the N word unless he feels his characters would speak that way. If not, they wont say it. Its like telling a writer to not use swears in his books.

    BULLSHIT ON THAT.

I too love all of QT's films and hes one of my favourite directors. But I just don't believe that it's appropriate for Pete to indulge in hegemony and berate anyone who questions something that Tarantino has done. There are people who believe in objective criticism and not blind agreement.

Example: on the Tarantino Archives forum someone asked whether or not it was a slight slip up in Tarantino's script for Julia to call Mike "Zatoichi". This was met by a nonsensical barrage of childish slurs from Pete who threw all of his toys out of the pram at the thought that QT was anything but infallible.

The point is it's people like Pete who prevent people from being able to express their opinions without being lambasted for it.

    [22] On Jun-02-2007, Pete wrote:

If people are intelligent about the stuff they say then Ill have an intelligent conversation but when you say stuff like: "Jungle Julia wouldnt know who Zatoichi is, thats bad writing by QT". You think Im not gonna call you a jackass etc? Id do it again too because thats my honest feelings on a stupid statement like that.

Its all in how people express themselves, if youre bashing a film because one of the characters make a reference to a samurai film character (Uh, Its QTs script and his character) then you deserve to be called an idiot. What youre saying is that you know Jungle Julia's backstory and she isnt intelligent or enough of a film geek to know who Zatoichi is. Thats BS. You didnt write the script or make up the character. So you CANT say that.

Maybe you should get a brain and think about stuff before you blurt out dumb statements. Then this crap wont happen to you.

    [23] On Jun-02-2007, Pete wrote:

For instance: Jungle Julia lives in Austin Texas and hangs out with lots of film people like her boyfriend Christian Simonsen. There IS a slight possibility that she saw a Zatoichi film sometime in her life while hanging out with those people.

THINK ABOUT IT. Im not wrong.

    [24] On Jun-02-2007, Gman wrote:

Opinion is the last refuge of an idiot. If you can't justify what you believe, it becomes an opinion. Either Julia is smart enough or not smart enough. It's A or B, believe it or not, Tarantino already wrote that character and it's not just your opinion when you chime in with your own rewrites about her backstory. Opinion is for minutia like "I don't like your haircut", it's not for things that have factual basis. You can't say "It's my opinion that that's not true".

    [25] On Jun-03-2007, Kez wrote:

You guys seem to think that I'm the one that wrote that thing about Mike and Zatoichi but I'm not. I just picked something from that forum. I myself think it's perfectly reasonable that Julia calls him this.

I don't agree with the person who said this (and BTW this person wasn't "bashing the film") but I didn't swear at them and insult them personally cause disagreeing with someone is not a good enough reason to attack them with insults and call them a "jackass."

Any forum is meant to be about a free expression of thoughts and feelings between like-minded people. FREE EXPRESSION! PETE DOESN'T ALLOW PEOPLE TO EXPRESS THEIR THOUGHTS WITHOUT BEING ATTACKED! He clogs up the forum with insults and childish slurs which it takes an age to wade through before you can get to any actual interesting discussion.

    [26] On Jun-03-2007, Pete wrote:

Ohhh shut up. I allow people to express their opinions its only when they are obviously uninformed/ignorant about the stuff the say that I get pissed off. If people dont like something and arent disrespectful about it, then I have no problem.

Also, if they have the right to disrespect something I like, I have the right to respond to that. Its a free country.

I think you know exactly what Im saying.

    [27] On Jun-03-2007, Kez wrote:

If I think someones talking out their ass, Im not going to agree with them. Yes, I might insult them if I think what they say is REALLY ignorant. Its just a natural reaction.

Its not like if someone says: I didnt like Kill Bill. Im gonna start swearing at them. Its when people say stupid stuff like "Jungle Julia wouldnt know who Zatoichi is, thats bad writing by QT".

Thats different. Thats someone acting as if THEY are above and beyond QTs thought process and they just arent.

Dont make me out to be the worst fan of QT, Im not. I just dont like blind ignorance.

    [30] On Jun-03-2007, Kez wrote:

I don't think that questioning a simple writing decision of QT's means that someone is saying that they are above his thought process. Your reaction to that comment was however typical fanboy hegemony and hero worship.

We all know that critics could not make films that are good as quentins but thay still have to criticize his work when they see fit. If they werent able to do this then they would be out of a job. People who are lesser than QT can criticise him. Its just an expression of their feelings.

If your natural reaction to a slight criticism of your hero is to launch an attack on that person then I'm not sure what kinda person you are.

    [31] On Jun-03-2007, Pete wrote:

Well, the bottom line here is. Who is right and who is wrong? I think Im in the right, regardless of whether I insulted that person or not.

This isnt even about someones opinion. Its about that person saying QT as a writer is incorrect in what he writes. That is 100% bullsh*t. You know it and I know it and everyone else does too. Thats basically like telling a musician, "The song you wrote isnt bring played correctly by you".

I dont blindly worship QT. That type of statement pisses me off to no end. That is not true. If I am a fan of a director and I love his work, that doesnt mean I "worship" him. Why should I feel guilty about being a big fan of an artist?
