what is the story behind the misspelled title?

The film was not a let down, shove it.
The story behind the misspelled title as I understand it is that it's a reference to the older war movie entitled Inglorious Bastards, which is one of Tarantino's favorite war movies.

the misspelled title is because aldo raine (brad pitt) has it written on the butt of his rifle, implying that he's not fully literate, and honestly i don't understand why anyone wouldn't like this movie, and don't try to explain it to me because i'm not going to understand.

My new favorite movie. It took over Fight Club and Boondock Saints spots for me. That a BIG F**KING DEAL, because those are two of the greatest films of our generation. If you dont like this movie then you should stick the the Pixar films and shove it!!!!

If you cant understand the appeal of Basterds, there is no hope of ever explaining it. You simply wouldn't understand the "what if" aspect of what would have happened to the Nazi superiority complex had a group like the Basterds reallt existed and operated during WWII. Terrorism used to fight terrorism is the ultimate irony.

In, my humble opinion, this movie was made to express how we, the Allies, wanted history to happen. It defined what a 'golden goose egg' would have been in the war. The beginning only serves as a harsh reminder of how serious the topic truly is using boring old dialog, but still finds a way to kill everyone in a Tarantino way. He held my attention with hopes of revenge while waiting and waiting. The ending was not disappointing, but not predictable and very agonizing. Mr. Tarantino has purposefully put several knots in the plot to create plausible chaos and multiple outcomes, but the ending is set up nicely.
