About the last movie of Quentin Tarantino that I liked was Pulp Fiction. Sadly, Inglorious Basterds is so horrible for so many reasons. Still I can't say that I would say that "Inglorious Bastards" is a good movie. I wouldn't even call it a movie at all, as it more or less lacks the main aspect of a good movie, that is a story as such.
"Inglorious Bastards" is, as so many Tarrantino films are, more or less a compilation of scenes. I have to admit there are many good dialogues and lots of funny scenes, but there is really no story to them. Over the lenght this makes "inglorious Bastards" very boring and unsatisfying.
To me it's a miracle that so many otherwise good moviecritics are so lyrical over something like "Inglorious Bastards"

Sorry that I don't belong to the people who takes every movie Tarantino as granted to be a masterpiece. Loved Reservoire Dogs and Pulp Fiction. Both movies which prove and highlighten Tarantinos strenghts. Namely strong and witty dialogues. As stated above Inglourious Bastards has those as well, but due to the lacking of a real story the dialogues stand more or less alone in sequences, giving the movie - in my opinion - a quite shattered and inconsistent feeling.
Having said this, I have to say that Tarantino is a strong director which hopefully in the future will make more movies that benefit from his strong writting skills.

And Tarantino has his trademarks, biting dialogue, lots of violence and comedy that are mixed in unpredictable amounts. OK, that Tarantino, thats why we see his films.

And we all know that if you put something in a recipe that is completely wrong, what is cooked is bad. And this movie was just flat out bad.

There are some film genres that just dont lend themselves to a director s particular vision...if it is too far off and I beleive one of them is the historical period movie.

Both Jack Benny and Mel Brooks made To Be or Not To Be, it was clearly comedy that maanged to poke fun at the monstrous Third Reich.

But, Tarantino has no subtlety or deft touch and both the tragedy and the comedy in this movie is a very bad stew (returning to my recipe analogy).

Its a fantasy film, but set in a specific time and place with attention paid to many things expected in a period movie, costumes, cars architecture, armament, etc. And there is this jarring juxtaposiiton of characters dressed perfectly as SS colonels or French movie theater owners saying Tarantino s dialogue that is so completley tone deaf to the period.

I might compare IB to Coppola s Marie Antoinette, sumptuously costumed and photographed, fabulous sets, etc, but music and dialogue that is completely wrong.

A director can make their personal vision thee centerpiece of any movie, but for the historical period movie, its a enormous risk. In my opinion, Tarantino was way way off.
