Animated Kill Bill Features

Uma Thurman talks about the apparently immenent release of the companion anime Kill Bill stories. Here's what she had to say.

"His anime stuff is strong," she smiled.

"It has nothing to do with me," she said. "It has to do with another character. You'll have to see."

Supposedly, this is going to be part of an expanded Kill Bill DVD release.

Note: Thanks to everybody who sent in links to this story. My wife gave birth to our 2nd child a week ago today and I haven't been on the net much to find news or respond to emails.

Weinstein Co. Buys Kill Buljo Rights

As much as most of you hated the idea of the Kill Buljo parody, I'm sure you'll be equally thrilled to hear that Weinstein Co has bought the US rights to the film. Probably not coming to theaters - it'll be a straight to DVD release.

Bad Taste Bears Tarantino Event

Everyone's favorite Tarantino-themed band, the Tarantinotes are going to be playing at the Bad Taste Bears Tarantino Event on March 31st.

The event is to celebrate the launch of Killed Bill. There are only 4,000 of the yellow being created, and only 700 of the pictured limited edition black version. There is also going to be a great looking Tarantino sketch book available that I'd love to get my hands on.

Check out the event website for all the details.

Kill Bill Prequel & Sequel?

Never one at a lack for movie ideas, QT threw out the idea of doing an animated prequel and sequel of Kill Bill once Grind House gets finished up. I rather doubt this will ever actually happen, but if it does, lets all hope that Inglorious Bastards gets done first.

Kill Bill Special Edition DVD

Looks like it might be a while for those of us waiting for the big Kill Bill special edition DVD because QT is going to re-release the film in 1 piece in late 2006 first. Once thats done, then he'll get to the process of putting the special edition DVD together.
He says, "I want to cut the whole movie together like one big epic with an intermission in the middle like a 60s film. It'll be coming out in theatres.

"I've been holding off because I've been working on it for so long that I just wanted a year off from Kill Bill and then I'll do the big supplementary DVD package."
So for about another year, you'll just have to put up with the separate Volume 1 and Volume 2 DVDs.

Tarantino As Shakespeare

Eric David has written a long essay on the role of vice in Quentin Tarantino's films. I think alot of the connections he tries to make - particularly the paragraph on the name Bill from Kill Bill - are a real stretch. Still an interesting article though.

Kill Bill career revival be damned? After resurrecting the career of both David Carradine and Daryl Hannah with the film, they haven't exactly set the world on fire with new roles. And now, Hannah is quit acting to save the planet.

Kill Bill Casebook

Amazon has a new Kill Bill product with no description and I can't find anything about it, but its a Kill Bill: An Unofficial Casebook. I assume its either an analysis of the movie, how it was made, and all its connections to the martial arts films that Tarantino mentioned as inspiration, but thats just a guess. They also have a Kill Bill 2005 calander.

Also, I thought I'd just put up some of the Kill Bill DVD product images from Japan. We really seem to get screwed when it comes to the cool cover art. Kill Bill V2 Wins 'Oscar Minor'

I'll let them describe to you what this award is all about:
They might as well be called the Short Attention Span Oscars, so dominated are the Academy Awards by films that open in the second half of the year. So, in recognition of all those award-worthy performances from January to June, we bestow our own mid-year movie honors: The Oscar Minors.
So without further explanation, Kill Bill V2 wins for Best Picture, Tarantino wins for Best Director, and Uma gets edged out for Best Actress.

Unofficial or not, its nice to see Tarantino's work get recognized for its quality.

Onion AV Interviews David Carradine

Another interesting interview with David Carradine [thanks to Evan for the link]
Onion AV: Do you see Kill Bill as one film?

David Carradine: Yeah, it's one long film. Back before they split it into two parts, it was one film, and that's how you should think about it. And I don't think it will take very long—you'll be seeing it that way, because there are enough Tarantino fans who want to see it that way, and all you need to do is remove the credits in the middle. It holds together. Wham, it's a three-and-a-half-hour epic fucking masterpiece of exploitation moviemaking. That's what he calls it. He'll never tell you that what he's actually doing is giving himself the ability to be a great director like David Lean or somebody like that. He hides. He's very subversive, right? All the techniques available, moments of great beauty and great terror in this picture, particularly if you see it as one picture, you see that it flows. Everyone says that Part Two is a much different picture. Well, if you look at it together, you'll see that it flows together. It doesn't just jump. That's the way he designed it. He wanted everybody to think that it was just a simple action movie, and be plunged into this tragic love story that has a lot of the feeling of Sergio Leone, but also has the feeling of Shakespeare.

1st Negative Review Of Kill Bill 2

Well, its the 1st negative review that I've seen anyhow. The New Yorker has a long, negative review of Kill Bill 2 (spoiler warning). Here's an excerpt:
Quentin Tarantino’s “Kill Bill Vol. 2” is a shapeless mess, but at least it’s not as monotonous as “Kill Bill Vol. 1.” It has some landscape and some odd characters, whereas the earlier movie consisted mostly of sliced-cranium combat scenes and lacquered-glitz interiors and mock emotions like “anger” and “grief” that linked the fight episodes the way a thin string might hold a set of glittering flea-market jewels. “Kill Bill Vol. 1” was sequenced, but it wasn’t really plotted; it had faces, bodies, and limbs (often severed), but it didn’t have characters; it had spasmodic action but nothing approaching dramatic life.

Kill Bill .5?

To go along with Tarantino's talk of a sequel to Kill Bill in 15 years, he's also floating the idea of an animated prequel to Kill Bill:
... focus on the three men - pimp Estebian Vihaio and martial arts masters Hattori Hanzo and Pei Mai
This same little IMDB article mentions that Quentin will be directing a portion of Robert Rodriguez's next film, Sin City. In order for that to happen, Rodriguez actually had to resign from the Director's Guild because of an arcane rule about one director, one film. [Hat tip to Eric for the Rodriguez story]

Kill Bill 3?

This is how crazy rumors get started. Tarantino tells Entertainment Weekly he'll make a sequel to Kill Bill - in 15 years.
The star will be Vernita Green's (Vivica A. Fox's) daughter, Nikki (Ambrosia Kelley). I've already got the whole mythology: Sofie Fatale (Julie Dreyfus) will get all of Bill's money. She'll raise Nikki, who'll take on The Bride," he says. "Nikki deserves her revenge every bit as much as The Bride deserved hers. I might even shoot a couple of scenes for it now so I can get the actresses while they're this age."
15 years? Why not just shoot it after Inglorious Bastards using a different, older, girl to play Nikki's part when she's all grown up? Could it be because he really doesn't intend to make a Volume 3? That'd be my guess.

How David Carradine Became Bill

Michael Madsen recounts an interesting story about how and why Tarantino fired Warren Beatty and hired David Carradine to play Bill in Kill Bill.
In fact, he (Madsen) remembers going to a dinner party that producer Lawrence Bender held for Beatty so that he could meet the actor and "hang out and feel if we were comfortable with each other, seeing that we had to be brothers and all." The meeting went well and about three days later Madsen got a phone call from the director.

"He goes, 'Well, I just fired Warren.' And I said, 'Oh my God. You did?' And he said, 'Yeah, yeah.' He said, 'He doesn't understand what the movie's about and I'm not going to go through this. He doesn't understand what the movie's about, he doesn't want to do it and I don't want him to do it,'" Madsen recalls.

"I said, 'Well who in the name of god is going to play Bill?' And he goes, 'Are you ready?' And I said, 'Yeah, I'm ready g**d**n it. Who is it?' And he said, 'David Carradine.' And I remember that I was completely and totally stunned. I mean it so took me off guard. I wouldn't of thought of David in a million years. At the same time I realized that it made more sense than anything," says Madsen. "And the first time I saw David I knew that he could handle it and obviously he did, because he's wonderful in the picture."

Hollywood Reporter Reviews Kill Bill V2

The Hollywood Reporter has yet another glowing review of Kill Bill Volume 2.
"Kill Bill-Vol. 2" puts to shame doubts entertained about aesthetic strategies or structural imbalance provoked by "Kill Bill-Vol. 1."

Now that the entirety of Quentin Tarantino's epic revenge melodrama is on view, "Kill Bill" emerges as a brilliant, invigorating work, one to muse over for years to come. ... Here is a movie that not only pays homage to a host of action-movie styles but rigorously explores its pulp fiction for visceral truths that link culture and cinema. Here's a movie that both academics bundled in film theories and teenagers on hot dates will find supercool.

Box office-wise, the sky's the limit. Not only will "Vol. 2" enjoy a hugely successful theatrical run, but many of us will eventually demand the bifurcated sections of "Kill Bill" be conjoined into a single showing both in theaters and later in home entertainment. For what once felt out of balance now plays in perfect harmony. What once seemed to lack humor or subtext now has plenty.

UPDATE: Yet another good review from Roger Friedman. [thanks to Gregory for the link]

Ebert and Roeper Kill Bill V2 Review MP3

Via reader Elton:
I stayed up late last night to watch their advance review on CBS. They both were in total agreement that it deserves two thumbs way up and Egbert said that though Volume 1 was not on his top 10 list last year, Volume 2 will definitely be on this year's. He cited things like clever dialogue from Michael Madsen, and I'm trying to remember what else but again, it was late =P Oh I remember he referenced a technique in Pulp Fiction where there was stuff you didn't see but from how they described it you can imagine it in your head. He also said something about a choice that Madsen gave The Bride between hairspray and a flashlight, but I didnt read the second half of the script so I don't know what that's about. He said a lot of good things about it and how it makes you appreciate the first one more and that you don't need to have seen volume 1 to fully enjoy it.
The bottom line is 2 thumbs way up. Roeper says that this film is so good it increases his appreciation for Volume I. Roeper also says that if the film were to be released together, it would be worthy of consideration for Best Picture. Obviously, this is very good news.

Runtime for Volume 2 is being reported as 137 minutes, which puts the total film at roughly 4 hours and 11 minutes long.

I'm actually more pumped up to see this half of the film than I was the 1st time around.

New Kill Bill V2 TV Spot

The official Kill Bill website has been updated with a Volume 1 DVD trailer. I haven't had any luck getting it to play as of yet, but maybe somethings screwed up on my end.

Also, although I see nothing mentioned on the web anywhere, I just saw a new TV spot for Kill Bill Volume 2. Hopefully, something will appear online shortly.

UPDATE: The TV spot for Kill Bill Volume 2 can be seen here.

Kill Bill 2 Soundtrack Press Info

Just got an email from Dan letting me know that the official Warner Brothers press release for the Kill Bill 2 soundtrack has been posted:
Kill Bill Vol. 2, the highly anticipated follow-up to Quentin Tarantino's box office hit Kill Bill Vol. 1, is set to hit U.K. cinemas nationwide on April 23rd. The soundtrack for Kill Bill Vol.2 will be released in the U.K. on April 19th on Maverick Records/WEA and will feature new cutting edge tracks from Johnny Cash, Malcolm McLaren, and Wu-Tang Clan.

After a hugely successful movie debut last October, Kill Bill Vol.1, which featured a range of classic tracks from Nancy Sinatra's "Bang Bang (My Baby Shot Me Down)" to RZA's "Ode to Oren Ishii", the soundtrack was a sell out success in the U.K, debuting at Number 1 on the UK soundtrack chart and selling over 120,000 copies.

The soundtrack for Kill Bill Vol. 2 is set to carry on this success, with classic tracks from the multi-platinum selling Wu Tang Clan, the 'God of Modern Movie' music Ennio Morricone ("Il Tramonto", "A Silhouette Of Doom") and the rockability kitsch of Charlie Feathers ("Can't Hardly Stand It").
They also have a 1417 x 1417 version of the cover that would make a good desktop background with some cropping. You'll also notice that the CD cover for the UK soundtrack in this press release has a slightly different cover than the US version posted her previously.

You can buy the Volume 2 soundtrack here.

David Carradine Talks Up Kill Bill 2

Not suprisingly, he likes it.
"The content, even the style, are very different. It's not the juggernaut of fighting that the first one was, although there's a lot of hot action in it. Everyone talks a lot -- what people are used to with Quentin.'

"The heart of the movie is the stuff between me and Uma -- wonderful stuff. I just saw the finished picture, and it's beyond my expectations,' adds Carradine of the feature opening April 16. "The second one is, I think, a better picture than the first.'
MSNBC also has a longer article about Carradine.
"Bill is more fun than anything," Carradine said. "Bill has virtually no human problems. He’s just kind of put himself above it all. He's actually a very charming guy. Yeah, he kills people for a living, but ... As far as him being a villain, there are no good guys in a Quentin Tarantino movie. Everybody has an agenda, everybody is a criminal, and everybody has a certain nobility."

New Japanese Trailer For Kill Bill 2

From reader Joey:
Just thought you'd like to know that as I was checking out www.ComingSoon.net tonight, I noticed they added a link to a "new japanese trailer" for "...Volume 2". Although I wouldn't get too excited since there really isn't anything "new". It actually looks somewhat like a fan-created-trailer. Most of the footage is from Volume 1, and from the Volume 2 trailer...and additional V2 footage found in early Volume 1 trailers. There's one new scene with a panoramic shot of The Bride driving on the road, but who's to say it's from the movie.
I actually like this trailer just fine. It keeps with the 'Kill Is Love' theme from the Japanese poster.

Behind The Scenes Footage

ExtraTV.com has a behind the scenes clip up on their site today. The clip is only about 2 minutes long, but has some excerpts of interviews with Uma, Quentin, and Daryl Hannah.

Uma gets off the most interesting snippit, dropping a hint that it was Tarantino's intention to split Kill Bill into 2 movies all along. Inside info? Or just teasing a close friend?

1st Kill Bill Volume 2 Reviews

The Harry Knowles review of Kill Bill Volume 2 has been posted, along with 2 others. To be honest, I can't read Knowles site. Between the unending hype for every single movie and the huge purple fonts, its just too much for me. Seriously, that may be the worst design website (of any popularity) in the world.

Uma Makes Empire Cover

Uma Thurman is on the cover of the newest Empire Magazine and inside is an article (not online yet) that was summarized to me by Michael:
... thought I'd tell you bout two QT news items: Latest issue of UK Empire Mag has Uma interview in which she denies quentin's 'like a couple in every way' speech--she says he's not stupid and probably didn't say it at all. She also talks bit about vol 2 in general.
For all our sakes, I hope Tarantino either never said that or never reads this article. The last thing we need is for Quentin to realize that his muse doesn't have the hots for him the way he does for her. It might be 12 years till his next film is done if thats the case!

3 New Kill Bill V2 Posters!

Three new kick-ass posters for Kill Bill Volume 2 were revealed today. These blow the two previous posters out of the water as far as I'm concerned. I particularly like the one with the sword thru the 'to kill' list.

Also notice how the 1st and 3rd posters here both say 'The New film by Quentin Tarantino'. I was wondering how they'd label this thing - whether it would still say the 4th film like Volume I did, or whether they'd call it the 5th film. This seems to be a good alternative.

UPDATE: The 1st and 3rd posters presented here can now be purchased from All Posters: Poster 1 | Poster 3.

Tarantino Thinking Of Franchising Kill Bill

This is probably just Tarantino thinking outloud rather than a serious film idea, but you never know:
"I've thought of prequels and sequels," he said. "I had this great idea where we wait five years and come back not with the Bride as the main character, but Vernita's (Vivica A. Fox) daughter as the main character. It would be fifteen years in the future, and the Bride (Uma Thurman) would be in a wheelchair."

Kill Bill Volume 2 Delayed

The theatrical release date for Kill Bill Volume 2 has officially been pushed back to April 16th, 2004 in the US. It was originally scneduled for a February release. Rumor is, its worldwide opening may be at the Cannes Film Festival.

UPDATE: FoxNews has Quentin's explanation of the delay:
Tarantino told me that we will not be seeing "Kill Bill: Vol. 2" until April instead of the planned February release. "To make that date I would have had to come back from promoting ['Vol. 1'] and go right back into editing," he said. "I had to take a break."

Tarantino Is Picky About His Blood

The IMDB link to this little tidbit will expire shortly, so I've just copied the info here for you:
Hollywood hero Quentin Tarantino is back - and he's as bloody as ever. The True Romance scribe has finally completed his long-awaited fourth feature film as a director, Kill Bill, which stars Uma Thurman and Lucy Liu, and in the tradition of Reservoir Dogs, Pulp Fiction and Jackie Brown, it will be a bloody affair - except this time Quentin's demanding extra-special fluids.

He says, "I'm really particular about the blood, so we're using a mixture depending on the scenes. I say, 'I don't want horror movie blood, alright? I want Samurai blood.' You can't pour this raspberry pancake syrup on a sword and have it look good. You have to have this special kind of blood that you only see in samurai movies."
